1 EUR ≈ 655 XOF
Senegal uses the West African CFA franc (XOF), pegged to the Euro at a fixed rate of 1 EUR = 655.957 XOF. This peg makes budgeting straightforward for European International residents. The banking sector is relatively developed by West African standards, with a mix of local banks, pan-African groups, and French banking subsidiaries.
For International residents, the main challenge is not the quality of banking but the paperwork: most banks require residency documentation (CIE or long-stay visa) and a Senegalese address before opening an account. Plan ahead, and be patient — the process is bureaucratic but manageable.
The most International residents-friendly option. Good network of branches in Dakar. Accepts International residents with a long-stay visa and proof of address. English-speaking staff at some branches.
Pan-African bank with strong International residents acceptance. Known for international transfer capabilities. Good mobile app. Requires CIE or long-stay visa.
French banking subsidiary. Familiar interface for French International residents. Good international transfer options. Requires CIE.
Useful if you plan to buy property eventually. Less convenient for daily banking.ATIXIS / Banque Atlantique: Good for entrepreneurs and businesses. Multiple business account options.
We generally recommend CBAO or Ecobank for newly arrived International residents because the process is simpler and more internationally friendly.
valid passport + long-stay visa or CIE, 2-3 passport photos, proof of Senegalese address (rental contract), employer letter or proof of income/activity, a reference letter (some banks ask, though rarely enforced).
Visit a branch in person — you cannot open an account remotely. Morning visits are faster.
Submit your documents and initial deposit (minimum deposit varies: 50,000-200,000 XOF = ~75-300 EUR).
Wait for approval (3-7 business days). You will receive a temporary account number.
Collect your debit card and PIN (usually 5-10 days after approval).Note: Our concierge service can accompany you to the bank, help prepare your file, and introduce you to a contact who can expedite the process.

Mobile money is the everyday payment system in Senegal. Even if you have a bank account, you will use mobile money for most daily transactions: paying rent, buying food at market, taxis, utility bills, and peer-to-peer transfers.
The most popular mobile money platform in Senegal. Free transfers between Wave users. Very low fees for deposits and withdrawals.
App available in English. Set up with just your Senegalese phone number — no bank account required. Widely accepted at merchants, markets, and supermarkets.
Run by Orange (the telecoms operator). More established historically. Good network coverage.
Higher fees than Wave but available in more remote areas. Useful as a backup to Wave.
Download the Wave app, insert your Senegalese SIM, verify your identity (phone + photo ID), and deposit cash at a Wave agent (small shops marked with the orange-and-white logo are everywhere). Start transacting immediately.
Major banks support SWIFT and IBAN transfers. Processing usually takes 2–5 business days and fees range around 20–50 EUR depending on your originating bank.
Possible but more bureaucratic. Banks may require documentation of the purpose of transfer for larger amounts. Western Union and MoneyGram are available widely for smaller amounts.
Account frozen unexpectedly: Usually a KYC (Know Your Customer) update request. Respond promptly with updated documents.— ATM limits: Most ATMs cap at 150,000-300,000 XOF per transaction. Plan withdrawals accordingly.— Cards not working at some merchants: Some smaller merchants only accept cash or Wave. Always carry some cash.
